Agentic AI is often described as artificial intelligence that can plan tasks, use connected tools and take the next permitted action. For a Singapore SME, this does not mean giving an AI system unrestricted control of business operations.

A more practical starting point is a supervised AI agent. It can read information, interpret context, prepare a response, update a record or recommend an action. A person then reviews and approves important decisions before anything consequential happens.

This approach is relevant for facility managers, building owners, warehouse operators, engineering teams and service businesses dealing with emails, documents, work orders, quotations, invoices and recurring reports. The following ten use cases show where supervised agents may help.

1. Facility management and engineering request triage

An agent can monitor a shared mailbox, Telegram channel or service form for issues such as lighting faults, water leaks, air-conditioning complaints or equipment alarms. It can identify the location, urgency and likely trade, then create a work request in a database or business software.

Possible connections include n8n, Gmail or Microsoft Outlook, Google Sheets, Microsoft Lists, a facilities management platform and an AI model. A facilities coordinator should still approve the priority, assignment and any communication that affects tenants or contractors.

2. Preventive maintenance planning

A supervised agent can review asset registers, previous work orders, meter readings and maintenance schedules. It can identify overdue tasks, draft a weekly plan and highlight assets showing repeated faults.

Where should an SME start?

The easiest starting points are usually low-risk, reviewable workflows: management-report drafts, document classification, quotation first drafts, invoice data extraction and social-media content preparation. These workflows can begin with read-only access or draft-only outputs.

Workflows involving Permit-to-Work records, building controls, financial payments, personal data, customer compensation or contractual commitments require stronger cybersecurity and data controls. Access should be limited by role, actions should be logged, sensitive information should be protected and approval gates should be explicit.

Singapore guidance on agentic AI has highlighted the importance of human accountability, privacy, cybersecurity, permissions and proportionate controls. Practical experimentation, including SME-focused initiatives, also points towards solving specific business problems rather than deploying autonomous systems without boundaries. AI agents should be able to flag uncertainty, request missing information and stop when they lack sufficient evidence.

Why supervised workflows come first

Agentic systems can interpret context and choose from permitted next steps, but they can also misread instructions, use incomplete data or act on misleading content. Connected tools increase both usefulness and risk. A reliable implementation therefore starts with a clear process, approved data sources, limited permissions, audit trails and a human approval point.

Once a workflow performs consistently, the business can consider increasing autonomy for low-risk actions. High-impact decisions should continue to require accountable human approval.
